The memory of K.N. Igumnov is being worshiped at his birth-place. Children’s music school ¹ 1 of Lebedyan and the performing arts college of Lipetsk are named after K.N. Igumnov. The memorable bas-relief has been placed on the house in Lebedyan where he was born, lived and played for his fellow-townsmen. In Lebedyan there is Igumnov street. His relatives’ graves in the local cemetery have been tidied up. The All-Russia open contest of young pianists held in the Lipetsk region once in two years bears Konstantin Nickolaevich Igumnov’s name.
Since 1993 till 2002 four festivals and contests were held. Young performers from 7 cities of the Central Black-Soil Region took part in the 1st contest in 1993. 141 young pianists from 45 regions of Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Byelorussia took part in the IV All-Russia open festival and contest in 2001.
Within the framework of the festival contests of young pianists in two nominations were held: children’s music schools and fine arts schools, first, and, secondly, special music schools and colleges. In each nomination there are three age groups. The oldest one is up to 16 years old inclusive.
The jury is constantly headed by Naum Lvovich Shtarkman, K.N. Igumnov’s pupil, People’s Artist of Russia, prize-winner of international contests, professor of the Moscow state conservatory named after P.I. Chaikovskyi.
Members of the jury, K.N. Igumnov’s pupils, students and post-graduates of higher music institutions of Moscow, St.Petesburg, Voronezh participated in festival concerts in Lipetsk, Lebedyan, Zadonsk and Elets of the Lipetsk region.
Within the framework of the festival pedagogical conferences under the standing theme “K.N. Igumnov as a founder of one of Russian piano school branches” were always held. Reports and talks were given by K.N.Igumnov’s pupils and relatives, those acquainted with him and younger followers of "Igumnov’s school". As a rule, conferences were held in Lebedyan, the pianist’s birth-place. Besides, Igumnov’s pupils and prize-winners of the contest gave concerts.
Participants of festivals went on excursions. They were shown around Lebedyan, saw historical places of interest and places connected with the Igumnovs: churches, Igumnovs’ houses and tombstones.
Participants met Igumnov’s fellow-townsmen at the local culture house and children at the music school named after K.N.Igumnov. Within the framework of the festival K.N. Igumnov’s pupils’ master classes are held.
Mass media always covered festival proceedings profusely. The Igumnov contest has gained great acclaim with music lovers and professionals. It has been incorporated into Association of All-Russia contests. The CD containing performances of laureates of the IV Igumnov contest has been released.
Prize-winners of the Igumnov contest S. Basukinskyi, N. Bulatsevskyi, A. Piloyan, A. Korzhavina, A. Sytchev and others perform in Lipetsk, other Russian cities and abroad on a regular basis.
Members of the jury, followers of “Igumnov’s school” N. Shtarkman, M. Gambaryan, V. Khanetskyi, N. Filatova conduct master classes and give concerts in the Lipetsk region constantly.
The organizing committee keeps in touch with K.N.Igumnov’s relatives - Elena Rogozina (the city of Voronezh),Vitold Rom and his family (the city of Moscow) who are invited for all the festivals. The committee is in correspondence with K.N. Igumnov’s pupils B.A. Goldfeder (Israel), B. Friedman (Israel), E. Ambakumyan (Armenia) and others who live beyond Russia.
With every year passing, unfortunately, fewer Igumnov’s pupils remain alive as they all are senior citizens.
Each of the past five Igumnov contests received a considerable amount of greetings from today’s celebrities, admirers of K.N.Igumnov’s genius, his pupils testifying all to huge importance of the contest not only for the cultural situation of the region but also of the whole Russia.
